Preparing for Your First Online Prenatal Yoga Class

A little preparation helps your first session feel calm and comfortable. Here’s a simple checklist to work through beforehand.

1. Talk to your healthcare professional

Before starting or changing any exercise during pregnancy, check in with your doctor, midwife or other qualified healthcare professional. Every pregnancy is different, and some conditions mean certain movements should be modified or avoided. Make a note of any guidance you’re given so you can share it with your instructor.

2. Prepare a comfortable space

Choose a spot with enough room to stretch your arms out in every direction. A few things make a big difference:

  • A stable, non-slip floor with a yoga mat or rug.
  • A sturdy chair or clear wall space nearby for balance.
  • A cool, well-ventilated room — avoid getting overheated.
  • Your device placed so you can hear clearly and, if you wish, be seen.

3. Gather your props

Several cushions or pillows are especially useful for supported seated postures and side-lying rest. Add a blanket for warmth and keep a bottle of water within reach. Wear soft, comfortable clothing that doesn’t restrict your breathing or movement.

4. Share what your instructor needs to know

Before your first class, let your instructor know how far along you are and about any pregnancy-related considerations or advice from your healthcare professional. It’s best to discuss this directly with them rather than including detailed medical information in an online form.

“Listening to your body is always more important than completing a posture.”

5. During class, listen to your body

Move at a pace that feels right, rest whenever you need, and skip anything that doesn’t feel comfortable. Breathing should stay smooth and easy — you should be able to talk comfortably throughout.

Stop exercising and contact your healthcare professional or emergency services if you notice symptoms such as pain, bleeding, dizziness, shortness of breath, regular contractions or reduced baby movements.

6. Afterwards

Give yourself a few quiet minutes before returning to your day. Have a drink of water, and notice how you feel. If you have questions about the session, jot them down for your instructor.
